Fragrance oils are safe, provide a much wider variety of aromas, are much more cost-effective than essential oils and make the best scented candles.

This might cause some confusion for candle afficionados trying to understand what a candle smells like and how those beautiful scents are made. So today, we'll explain what the differences are between fragrance oils and essential oils in candles.

The main difference between fragrance oils and essential oils is that fragrance oils are manufactured in a laboratory, whereas essential oils are extracted directly from plants and other natural sources.

Essential oils were first distilled by the Arabs in their golden age. Over time, the use of essential oils became popular in a wide range of fields, including medicine, aromatherapy, cooking, as well as the fragrance industry.

Essential oils are more challenging because they're more volatile, meaning they have a lower boiling point and evaporate more quickly when exposed to heat. Typically, candles with essential oils don't retain their scent as long as candles with fragrance oils.

In addition to the volatility of essential oils we mentioned above, the quality of the essential oil may vary depending on factors outside of your control, such as how well the plants the essential oil came from were raised, stored, and transported.

Using only high quality essential oils yields the best results. However, quality essential oils tend to be quite pricey, especially considering how much one goes through when mixing and testing new candle fragrances.

But despite the fact that using essential oils in candles is pricier and more complicated, some makers prefer this option because the ingredients are all natural and may yield certain health benefits.

Fragrance oils, instead of being extracted directly, are made in a lab. They contain a type of chemical called Diethyl Phthalate (DEP), which is used as a solvent that elevates the fragrance and makes it last longer.

Regardless of whether you prefer essential oils or fragrance oils in your scented candles, keep in mind that the quality of the oil used matters a lot. If you're making your own candles, you'll get better results if you buy your oil from a reputable supplier as opposed to from a craft store with cheap, mass-produced oils. And the same goes for buying candles!

Most suppliers will give IFRA rates for fragrances. This will help determine how much fragrance can be used in a particular product, no matter where you buy. If the IFRA rate is not listed you should take caution in buying that fragrance until you know what the rates are. Many fragrances are for use in candles and non-skin contact products only and are not skin safe!

One thing to look for is fragrance with a safety rate below 5%. If a fragrance oil has a rate lower than the typical use rate of 5%, be sure to follow the IFRA guidelines for that particular fragrance to avoid irritation.

Since the lotion use rate of 8th & Ocean is low, I will either have to be alright with a light-smelling product or I will have to choose another fragrance that has a higher lotion use rate. I typically like to add fragrance to lotion at a rate of 1%.

Unfortunately, there can be a lot confusion around the topic of scented oils for candles, including questions like, Are essential oils and fragrance oils the same? Are fragrance oils natural? and, ultimately, Are fragrance oils safe?

From there, the IFRA takes this data and publishes their recommendations and usage guidelines. These guidelines will include whether or not the oil is safe to use in bath and body products as well as in candles or diffusers.

So, its no wonder that the pandemic has seen a massive upswing of folks trying to learn how to make their own soy candles, either to sell as a side hustle- or just for their own wedding favours!

That's why we suggest starting with your desired wick choice and perhaps vessel, and then finding a wax that works best in that container, before testing fragrances.

Possibly the hardest- and most important part- of making your own candles, is nailing the fragrance. There is Hot Throw (how the candle smells when lit), Cold Throw (how it smells unlit) to master- plus you need to worry about adhesion, frosting, sink holes AND cracking. And that's after you've made an accord or scent that folks actually want to buy!

Your fragrant materials- whether you use fragrance oils or essential oils- are going to change how your wax behaves, which will effect ALL of the sensory elements above- both visual issues and fragrant issues.

So, long story short: you may need to test a few fragrances and scent combinations before you're on your way to selling your candles (or burning them yourself.). When in doubt, go with a single, in-house blend of fragrance oils such as the one's offered by VCC.

NDA is a tried and true supplier, who is really the ONLY supplier we can recommend for EO's (essential oils). Although you CAN get wax here, they only offer C3, a container blend that is more for pro's than hobbyists.

An important note about essential oils: they are some of the most highly adulterated materials on the market! There aren't enough plants to meed demand for EO;s, meaning (as with Olive Oil), MANY essential oils are "fake" for lack of a better word. ONLY ever buy essential oils that have clear batch numbers- and the required MSDS sheets to go with them. For this reason, NDA is the only supplier we have found in Canada that we would trust with our lives when it comes to TRUE essential oils.

We have put a link to just the pthalate-free candle scents above, as you need to be cautious about consumer behaviour when making candles, and it's very common to get this question from customers.

This out-of-the-way supplier is on Vancouver Island of all places, so their shipping fees are HIGH. But, in our experience it's worth it for their super unique, higher-end premium candle fragrances.

For this reason- to make SAFE candles that don't lead to broken jars, or jars filled with molten hot wax- you need to be able to MATCH YOUR WICK SIZE to your jar diameter, once you've decided on your wax and fragrance.

This fragrance is simply amazing. I was surprised at how the aroma traveled when I cracked open the bottle. My "husband" immediately fell in love with this fragrance gave it a new name and took the bottle hostage. I don't use more than 8% of the fragrance for candles and ML's for room sprays.
